Cleaning the Garage... Finding Treasures!

As I've shared before, my parents house is FULL of antiques and treasures which have been passed down for generations. Two weekends ago Avaree and I went to visit for the weekend while Mr. B&B worked. I LOVE my family and every time I go home it feels like taking a big, deep breath of fresh air. Momma made biscuits and gravy or chicken and dumplings and lots of yummy comfort food. (No they don't live in the South :).. Southern California actually! ha!) I got to see my little sister who is a junior in college. It was a wonderfully relaxing weekend and Avaree got to spend some good snuggle time with "Nana" and "Papa" too!

But what I want to share with you are the treasures I "inherited" from their garage... My Momma had a cousin who lived in a farmhouse (a crooked, falling down, farmhouse) in Kansas. He died about 10 years ago and had so much stuff that my Momma has still not gone through it all. We went through box after box of letters, postcards, pictures, knick knacks, kitchenware, and other fascinating "old" things.

Here are some of the things I brought home! (Except the monogrammed cup, that is from Anthropologie)

We found this old grain/ corn sack that I made into a pillow...

These old shelves were varnished and I painted them white... The top one was used to hang by the door to hold rock salt. It was used to throw salt on the sidewalk to melt ice before going out.

And lastly, my FAVORITE! We found countless letters and postcards dated from 1907... Look at the handwriting on these post cards... The stamps were 1/2 a cent and 1 cent. This was my 4th cousin who was writing to his wife and love... So beautiful and romantic! We also found some accounting books and notebooks...They look so perfect on my secretary desk...

Isn't it great to find treasures... especially with such great family stories!

My Rustic Crate from London...

I am so happy to share with you my latest garage sale find!
This rustic crate was for sale on the side of the road and I just had to pick it up!
The stamp on the front reads "Harrods The Depositories, Barnes, London SW."
Keep reading to hear more about the history of this crate...
Here are some pics of my new favorite things!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kahmac/2613398458/

I've been doing some research to find out where this chest came from... "Harrod's Depositories, Barnes London" is stamped on the front. Here's what I've discovered so far... Click HERE to read the full article...
"The Harrods Depository is an absurdly grand building, given its use as a warehouse. Five storeys high, it was designed in the 1890s in neoclassical style by William Hunt, with elegant bands of brick and stone, faience tiling, ornate flourishes and two domed towers reminiscent of pavilions of the Indian raj. Construction began 1894 and was finally completed in 1913."
"A photograph of 1921 show the Depository with a riverside quay and cranes to load barges. As the wording on the façade declares ‒ Harrods Furniture Depository ‒ this vast space was primarily used to store large items of furniture, awaiting despatch to clients, or to the showrooms of the Harrods department store in the Brompton Road, Knightsbridge. The Depository was designed to reflect (but not outdo) the grandeur of the mothership, which had been rebuilt in the 1880s following a fire that destroyed the original store – although its distinctive terracotta façade was not added until 1901–5"

The lady I bought it from (for a super cheap!!) didn't know anything of its past history. It was shipped from Barnes, London at some point that seems clear. I'd love to know the story and the history of what was contained inside and where this classic crate came from. For now, its sitting at the end of our bed. I think it is really special and I'm so excited to have found it!!

What do you think? Does anyone know more about Harrods Depository? Anyone have a similar crate?

I'm linkin' up...

Its not to late for some Pumpkin Bread... with Chocolate Chips, of course!

At the last minute yesterday I decided to make some Halloween pumpkin bread (with chocolate chips, of course!) I found these adorable mini loaf ceramics and goody bags at Michael's on clearance and decided to go for it!

We were taking Ava around to some of our close friend's houses to trick-or-treat so I decided we could bring the bread as a little gift. I used my Momma's pumpkin bread recipe, which I posted at the end of this post if you'd like to try it!

Look at these adorable yellow loaf pans! I couldn't resist! Then I found these black and white Happy Halloween bags... I added some black and white ribbon and here's the finished product! Who doesn't love a little black and white with yellow any time of the year... but it fit right in with the Halloween theme as well! And, of course, Momma's bread was delicious as always! Yummy!

Momma's Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (I used whole wheat flour)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips (I used Ghiradeli Milk Chocolate Chips, mmm!)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 1 pound size coffee cans, or three 9x5 inch loaf pans. (you can also use mini loaf pans- makes about 7 mini loaves)
  2. In a large bowl, combine sugar, pumpkin, oil, water, and eggs. Beat until smooth. Blend in flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts. Fill cans 1/2 to 3/4 full.
  3. Bake for 1 hour, or until an inserted knife comes out clean. Cool on wire racks before removing from cans or pans.
